"Black Swan," from the director of "Requiem For a Dream," fits in with the recent flare of 'movies that make you think.' It explores the birth and growth of an individual, as well as the loss of control that sometimes comes with passion, specifically that for an art form.
Although the movie is directed in a dark and creepy manner, it doesn't abuse the 'jump factor' like so many pseudo scary movies tend to do. Rather, it leaves the creepiness up to the audience, leaving the viewers feeling uneasy rather than scared. For those who don't particularly enjoy analyzing the finer details of the very well written story line, they can undoubtedly enjoy the lesbian scene between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, and the provocative building of their relationship throughout the film. The film also delves into the darkness of drugs and the uncomfortable feeling they leave you with. This, combined with the complications of madness and getting lost in your work, lead to a surprising ending. Although the twist pales greatly in comparison to the ever-popular Sixth Sense ending, it provides an interesting and thought provoking conclusion, leaving the audience wanting a bit more of an explanation.
Overall, the movie was surprising, entertaining, and sexy, with the added bonus of being thought provoking and intelligently directed. Certainly a movie to see, whether you want an evocative tale of passion, madness, and the fine line between, to see Kunis go down on Portman, or a healthy balance! Never has the classic tale of Swan Lake been so wonderfully and sexily portrayed.
Suggested for: Anyone who enjoys interesting plot lines, especially unique ones with thought provoking endings/anyone who doesn't mind spending $10.50 to see a short lesbian scene encapsulated in an interesting story, whether you understand the message or not.
